Can Indexing Make A Computer Slow?
I read something other day about stopping your computer’s indexing to help with a computer slow issue. Indexing can slow computers down if it is already overloaded and being strained with other issues. I don’t believe that the indexing function is actually part of the problem though.
Computer Slow Problem Ideas
Indexing is done by the computer to help you find things faster when you do a search. This is not an internet search, but strictly an internal one such as finding a document or a picture on your computer. It does not to help the computer find operational data.
The indexing will take place without your knowledge and will use up some of the capacity of the processor while it is running. But it happens very fast compared to a lot of other functions. In a healthy computer you would never know it is going on.
You can stop the indexing process yourself. Right click on C drive (under Computer or My Computer), go to the General tab and look at the bottom for a box that says “Index This Drive For Faster Searching”. Un-click it and the indexing will be disabled. It can be restarted the same way.
You could try this very simple test on your computer and see if it helps. If you can’t tell any difference in the performance, though, I would suggest turning the indexing back on.
RAM and Virtual Memory will both affect your computer performance. These are much more important in how fast a computer works. Virtual memory can be set up higher but most of our operating systems today will do this automatically. I know that after Vista the virtual memory will reset itself if more storage is needed.
RAM is different in that it is not part of the hard drive and its size is completely controlled by what has been installed in your computer. Look for more information on RAM in other posts (see above post Computer Registry Cleaners) and possible ways to increase your computer’s speed by adding additional capacity physically.
